Summary:
The film opens with scenes of a group of Japanese archaeologists dug up the caves that the Japanese soldiers on Iwo Jima during the war, and find something buried in the ground. The scene then moves to the year 1945.
Soldier Saigo, a former baker, and his colleagues are digging trenches on Iwo Jima. Saigo complained Kashiwara want to go home to his companion, and heard the commander until both beaten by reason of cowardice. Meanwhile, Lt. Gen. Tadamichi Kuribayashi arrives on Iwo Jima to take over leadership of the garrison and defenses start inspections are made on the island.
Kuribayashi asks the soldiers were digging trenches on the beach to stop, and ordered them to strengthen the defense in a higher place. Commander was asked to stop beating Saigo and Kashiwara, and told them both were given water and rest. The next evening, Baron Takeichi Nishi, an Olympic gold-winning athlete and an old friend Kuribayashi for dinner invites.
Lieutenant Colonel Takeichi announces that this time there is no naval support which helps maintain the Iwo Jima. Japanese naval fleet was destroyed in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Upon hearing this news, Kuribayashi evacuates the civilian population to the island of Honshu. The action reflects the decision that Iwo Jima would be maintained until death.
